Learn After Effect like a Creator│FiNCのクリエイティブ
Hi everyone, this is Rita who enjoys creating animations from creative team in FiNC! In my previous article, our creative team has held different training courses internally in FiNC. Since learning AE(abbreviation from After Effect) is not quite easy in the beginning. Therefore, this time I would like to share a thinking to learn After Effect in a useful way.
To begin with, let’s start with the thinking idea being a creator. As a creator, I believe lots of creators get asked the question,
“Where do you get your ideas?”
If it’s in my situation, I will respond:
“Observe and find motivated in your daily life!”
Once I started doing my design works, I always need ideas and insights to help my works to be creative. Inspired by the experience that I have collected and classified is a quite important factor in my works. Therefore, I would like to share a learning way to learn After Effect from a creator/designer’s perspective.
Ok, let’s start to learn After Effect from a creator’s perspective.
First, you have to find it interesting- Find motion graphic is interesting as an example. This is very important in the beginning of learning AE. This first step makes you notice you want to change and start. After all, motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going. Follow and collect the movie & animation effects from any kinds of social media posts that you interested in your daily life. Then, start searching topics and playing around you find interesting from your collection. Figure out what’s worth learning, and what’s not from the tutorials. After that, you move on to the next tutorial. Based on the tips you’ve learned, the more you enriched, the more information can be classified and summarized in order to facilitate the right use whiling creating motion graphics. Below you can find some useful web resources that I usually use and follow, providing After Effects tutorials of different levels.

As a beginner, this website could help you understand the basic concept of AE.
If you’ve learned the basic of the AE, this is a website that can motivate you to create more interesting motion graphic.
If you want to move your animation level to the 3D field. This is the website that could help you to create stunning 3D visual works by integrating your AE skills with Cinema4D.
By collecting the ideas and skills from your experience. Now it’s time to move on to next level – Put into practice to toward your goals! Start to think how to classify and facilitate the information that you’ve collected so far. Begin to create animation which motivates you by understanding the principle and using the tips that you’ve learned from the tutorials. After practicing for couple times, you can start to have the ability to create your own motion graphic from your imagination by using the right tips from your experience.
Indeed, this way is not only just for learning AE. It also works in learning any kinds of new skills, such as Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator etc. Even to your career. From AE learning perspective, based on the video collections you care and focus, creators have different senses of ideas and insights for their needs. And this will affect the field that you are going to be expert in- title designer, motion graphic artist, VFX artist etc.
